Recipe
1
In a mixing bowl, combine whole wheat flour, gram flour, a pinch of turmeric, red chili powder, carom seeds, salt, 1 tablespoon oil, and a little water to knead into a smooth, firm dough. Cover and let it rest for 15 minutes.
2
Whisk the boiled tuvar dal until smooth, add 2 cups of water to adjust consistency, and set aside.
3
Divide the dough into equal portions, roll them out into thin round discs like chapatis, and cut them into small diamond-shaped pieces using a knife or pizza cutter.
4
In a large heavy-bottomed pot, heat ghee over medium heat. Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, asafoetida, curry leaves, cinnamon, cloves, bay leaf, and dried red chilies.
5
Pour the prepared tuvar dal into the pot and bring it to a gentle boil.
6
Add jaggery, tamarind pulp, remaining turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt to the boiling dal, stirring well.
7
Carefully drop the prepared dhokli (diamond pieces) one by one into the boiling dal, gently stirring to prevent them from sticking together.
8
Cover the pot and let it simmer on medium-low heat for 12 to 15 minutes until the dhoklis are thoroughly cooked and the soup thickens slightly.
9
Stir in roasted peanuts and chopped fresh coriander leaves, then turn off the heat.
10
Serve hot in bowls accompanied by warm, soft rotis.
